How do I turn on ESV GreekTools?

ESV GreekTools is simple to turn on or off. After purchasing the ESV GreekTools module, login to your ESVBible.org account and select the Content button at the top of your homepage. Scroll down until you see ESV GreekTools. Toggle the switch on the right to “On” to turn ESV GreekTools on. Two changes will take place: the ESV GreekTools text interface will now appear in your main window, and a new tab labeled “ESV GreekTools” will appear in an auxiliary window. When you want to turn ESV GreekTools off, simply toggle the same switch to the “Off” position.

How do I change the display version in the main window?

GreekTools offers four text modes: Greek Only (Nestle-Aland 27th Edition), Greek Interlinear, ESV Reverse Interlinear, and English Only. To toggle between these displays, go to the “Text Mode” box in the ESV GreekTools tab. When you click on the arrow, a drop-down menu will appear, allowing you to select your desired text mode. Once you have selected your text mode, click “Change”. GreekTools will now display that version of the text in the main window. You can toggle between display versions at any time by selecting a different text mode from the drop-down menu.

What is all this information below each word in the main window?

The default display for ESV GreekTools offers a comprehensive list of original language data for all levels of users. Available data fields include the ESV text (Interlinear and Reverse Interlinear Display only), NA27 Greek text, Transliterated Greek word, Lexical form of Greek word, Transliterated Lexical form of Greek Word, Greek Parsing, and Strong’s Number. Each of these fields can be added or removed to fit your reading or study preferences.

How do I view more or less information in the main window?

ESV GreekTools makes it convenient to display as little or as much information as you need, when you need it. To turn individual data fields in either Interlinear or Reverse-Interlinear modes on or off, select the “Interlinear Display” button in the GreekTools tab found in your data window. When the button is pressed, you will have the option to select or deselect any of the available data fields that appear in your main display window. You can change the displayed interlinear fields at any time without disturbing the contents of your main data window.

What’s available in the GreekTools tab?

In addition to housing the Interlinear Display button, the ESV GreekTools tab offers you several important and helpful pieces of data for each Greek and/or English word in the main display window. To view the data entries in the ESV GreekTools tab, select a word in the main display window. When selected, a new set of data will appear in the ESV GreekTools tab. Data features include:

Contextual data displays the NA27 Greek Word as well as its corresponding English transliteration and translation, and an expanded parsing using the parsing structure of the ESV Reverse Interlinear.

Lexical data displays the Lexical form and English transliteration of the Greek word along with the corresponding Strong’s Number and ESV glosses.

Concordance data displays the results of a GreekTools Advanced Search on the Lexical form of the selected Greek word. Selecting “View More” will open the full results in a new window. If you would prefer to alter this basic concordance search, simply click on the Advanced Search button at the top of the ESV GreekTools tab.

For more information about the parse codes, view our Guide to Parsing Codes.

Why is it that when I click on certain Greek words, I see the information for more than one word in my ESV GreekTools tab?

The texts utilized by ESV GreekTools draw on the descriptive linking method that was initially developed for the ESV Reverse Interlinear. In all text modes, clicking on words that have been linked together will cause both terms to be displayed in the ESV GreekTools tab. This will not affect any specific, single-term search. Instead, it permits users with less familiarity with Greek to see how particular phrases work together to produce a specific phrase or idea.

How do I use the ESV GreekTools Advanced Search?

The ESV GreekTools Advanced Search places powerful search capabilities at your fingertips. From the ESV GreekTools tab or the main display window, click on the Advanced Search button. This brings up the ESV GreekTools Advanced Search window.

The ESV GreekTools Advanced Search window is divided into two sections. The first section provides you with four separate word search fields to accommodate all levels of language proficiency.

Section 1: Find Greek/English Word

English Word. Allows you to search the ESV text by English word. Results of this search will yield a full ESV Concordance entry for the searched term.

Lemma Word. Allows you to search the NA27 Greek text as well as the corresponding ESV text by the Transliterated Lexical form of any Greek word.

Greek Word. Allows you to search the NA27 Greek text as well as the corresponding ESV text by the Greek Lexical form of any Greek word in Greek characters. You can type using your own keyboard or by selecting the characters from the pop-up Greek keyboard.

Strong’s Number. Allows you to search the NA27 Greek text as well as the corresponding ESV text by Strong’s Number. To find the updated ESV-Strong’s Number, select the “Strong’s Listings” button next to the Strong’s Number search field. The ESV-Strong’s Numbers are specific to the ESV, so make sure to find the correct ESV-Strong’s Number for search query.

One unique feature of ESV GreekTools Advanced Search is its ability to allow you to search multiple fields at the same time. For instance, ESV GreekTools Advanced Search lets you limit your English word search to a particular Strong’s Number by filling in both the field for English word and the field for Strong’s number. Or, you can search for a particular English translation of a Greek word by filling in the English word and any of the remaining three fields. But that’s only half the power of GreekTools Advanced Search.

Section 2: Morphological Limiters

ESV GreekTools Advanced Search also offers you a full set of morphological limiters to further refine your search of the Greek text. Limiters cover all categories of parsing, and you can select as many or as few limiters as you need.

To utilize the morphological limiters, make sure you have filled in at least one of the categories in Section 1. Then, select your desired limiters from the dropdown menus. Your search results will now be limited to the occurrences of the term from Section 1 that also fit the morphological specifications.

Advanced Search Results

The results will be displayed in a separate page and broken down by book. This makes it easier to view trends for your particular word throughout the New Testament. To view results for each book, simply select the name of the book in the display chart. To view a specific entry, click the link for that result. The result will now be displayed in your main display window.
